The Land of the Lost....gnome man's land

We never forget the pieces we’ve lost along the way…for me there are three. The Claddagh ring that slipped off my finger while riding my bike at 7. I rode up and down my street countless times scouring the gutter for a glint of gold, never to find it.

The tri-color tourmaline pendant that slipped off my neck at a gem show in my early twenties….I knew it had a faulty clasp, why didn’t I fix it?! (at least, being at the gem show it hopefully ended up in grateful hands).

The peridot ring that I made (above!) in the early days of the pandemic….missing without ever leaving the house! I still can’t believe it didn’t show up, even after this year’s big move out of state. I looked everywhere.

Some people turn to higher help in these cases–I’ve heard of both a saint and an archangel you can call on to assist in bringing back lost items. Anyone had any luck with these? I’ve often imagined that there’s a sneaky little gnome somewhere out there sitting pretty on a cache of all our lost jewels, just waiting for us to find him.

This note was inspired by a friend who recently reached out after losing a pendant….looked down to see an empty dangling chain. I know well the feeling of losing a piece that you loved and held meaning for you.

My advice for the empty handed and broken hearted is to accept that for whatever reason, this stone or jewel had places to be and your time was simply up. I always hope that these pieces are found by someone who absolutely loves them….how fun would it be for you to find something like that! And to know that there are plenty of stones out there waiting to make your acquaintance–as in the case with my friend, I made her a new pendant!

Have a story of gems lost or found? I would love to hear. I’m always hoping to find gold sitting on the sidewalk–so far my luck has only turned up the mall kiosk mystery metal type of treasure. I’ll gladly leave these for the gnomes.
