Spinel? Do tell! Alternatives for August

Hello friend!

So, what’s a spinel? I often get asked this question about a certain stone a customer has never heard of before and I’m never sure how to answer. What info can I offer that would help someone feel better acquainted with a stone?

Are they interested in the geology or history, the hardness, or how it relates to other similar stones? Perhaps they want to know it by color or by the kind of energy it gives off.

Since I just realized, or re-realized, that spinel is an alternate birthstone for August (read my Peri-dot or Peri-dough post here) I figured it was high time I highlighted this stone you may or may not have heard of, but have been sneaking into my collection without proper ado.

Spinels are a stone of many colors–though I’m often drawn to pastels–there are specimens that are mistaken for rubies, having the same blood red color without the high price tag. They form similarly to rubies and sapphires and alongside them in the earth.

Their name comes from Latin “spina” referring to the pointy crystal shape they naturally form.

They have a hardness of 8, which makes them harder than quartz, and about the same hardness as an emerald–I’d say they are safe for regular wear. And they can be found all over Africa, Asia, and Brazil though sparingly.

Interesting that they are an alternative to peridot for August’s birthstone because they also form in the same layers of magma that create peridot. An appropriate stone considering Leo is a fire sign!

When looking up the energetic or metaphysical aspects of stones–you will always find a wide range of answers but can look for commonalities. These might be: helping with overall energy flow through your body, rejuvenating, emotional balance. I always recommend tuning into how a stone feels to you, that’s all that matters.

But I do like to look up the ancient Taoist stone meanings which says spinel is good for grounding, anchoring, low self esteem, depression, and lack of motivation. Assists in a rebirthing process.

You’ll notice in my pieces I’ve gravitated towards the lavender and the pink (surprise!), the pink being such a perfect pink in my eyes. But I do have a few new pieces coming where I’ve used blue spinel also.

Let me know if you’re feeling these spinels as much as I am! I’m also happy to customize a piece with different stones if possible so don’t hesitate to ask.
